Pygmy Dragon

Pygmy Wyvern
Medium: digital painting

Although small in size, Pygmy Wyverns are not members of the Fairy Dragon family. They are technically wyverns, as they lack forelegs. Their poison-barbed tail gives them the nickname Scorpion Drake or Scorpion Dragon. They live in hot, sandy deserts, and hunt by burrowing beneath the sand and pricking their prey with their barbs. The vemon is deadly and fast-acting, although not exceptionally painful. Even larger dragons give Pygmy Wyverns a large berth.

Pygmy Wyverns have been domesticated and bred by humans to lack their poison barbs. Domesticated Pygmies are about the size of small house cats or large squirrels. They enjoy being up high and will perch on their owners' shoulders if given the chance. They are very playful and intelligent.

The Magician's Daughter

The Magician's Daughter
Medium: digital painting
Here is the finished painting from this WIP: the-cynical-unicorn.deviantart…

Inspired by a scene in this fanfic: www.fanfiction.net/s/11005609/… . I decided to have a phoenix instead of constellations, because I thought it would be easier to visually understand (without context) a bird rather than floating pieces of light.

It's Rhys from The Two Princesses of Bamarre.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre

Addie and Meryl
Medium: digital painting
Rhys and Orn
Medium: digital painting

The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine has been one of my all-time favorite books ever since I first read it when I was 11 or 12. Everyone knows Ella Enchanted, but I think Two Princesses was much more emotionally intense, for a children's book. I think it would have made a fabulous Disney cartoon!

I enjoy doing "species-benders..?" on characters in books and movies, so here are my favorites as horses. Yeah, I totally gave them cutie marks like in MLP, and I don't care. I think they help tell about the characters in a very simple way. I'd like to think that at the end of the story, Addie's mark would change into a blossoming rose, rather than a rosebud. :) I also made Addie a more slender mare, as she was described as fine-boned compared to her robust sister.

Marine Animals

The Ocean Guard
Medium: digital painting
"Look out, here comes the Ocean Guard!"

I've done the Lion Guard as North American animals, so here they are as marine animals! Okay, the ocean isn't a continent, but it makes up most of the earth's surface, so I just rolled with it. It's Fuli the sailfish (the fastest), Beshte the blue whale (the strongest), Ono the mantis shrimp (the keenest of sight), Bunga the dolphin (the bravest), and Kion the orca (the fiercest). They're not drawn to scale, as you can probably tell.

Obviously there are lots of other animals that could have worked for these roles, but I liked these guys. I thought about making Kion a shark, but most sharks are actually pretty shy, so I settled on a killer whale because they are fierce hunters. Sailfish are so fast that they have special tissues in their eyes to keep their optic nerves warm when they swim at race car speeds! I think that's a good fit for Fuli. Dolphins have a reputation of being brave and heroic, so even if "bravery" is subjective in the animal kingdom, I figured a dolphin would be the best fit for Bunga. I think he would be a spinner dolphin because they're so playful. You could totally imaging one shouting "zuka zama!" as it jumps and twists out of the water. Beshte is a blue whale because, well, it's a blue whale. Blue whales are the largest (and therefore the strongest) known animals ever to have existed on earth. And mantis shrimp are one of those animals that no one seems to know about, but they have crazy good eyesight. Humans have three color rods (red, blue, and green), but mantis shrimp have 16! They can also move their claws so fast that it causes the water around it to boil, and they have the attitude to match. The mantis shrimp could be pretty much the entire Ocean Guard, haha!

Star Wars meets The Lion King

Pride Wars
Medium: digital painting
Star Wars: The Force Awakens characters in Lion King style! Kylo, why you gotta be such a grump? He's like that teenager on the High School playground who can't decide if he likes the girl, so he just bullies her.

Reirei and the Coyote Clan

North American Guard: Reirei, Goigoi, and Dogo
Medium: digital painting
Here are the jackals from The Lion Guard as coyotes to fit into the North American Guard theme! There wasn't a whole lot to change with them other than their coat colors, because jackals and coyotes look so similar already.
