Chinese Unicorn

Qilin
Medium: traditional bamboo brush and ink on rice paper
From the all-knowing Wikipedia: The qilin ([tɕʰǐ.lǐn]; Chinese: 麒麟), or kirin, is a mythical hooved chimerical creature known in Chinese and other East Asian cultures, said to appear with the imminent arrival or passing of a sage or illustrious ruler.

It's like a Chinese unicorn, guys!

The Dinosaur Guard

The Dinosaur Guard
Medium: digital painting
Just in time for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, here is the Dinosaur Guard! It's Fuli the Beishanlong grandis, Beshte the ultrasaurus, Bunga the velociraptor, Ono the Anhanguera blittersdorffi, and Kion the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Choosing a dinosaur for Kion was pretty straightforward: while T-Rex might not have been the biggest or meanest (we really don't know much about dinosaur behavior), T-Rexes are commonly accepted as being the biggest, baddest dinos out there. A lot of dinosaurs were probably very strong, but I picked an ultrasaur for Beshte because they were the biggest. I chose an Anhanguera blittersdorffi for Ono because, while we know almost nothing about dinosaurs' eyesight, these flying dinosaurs appeared to have held their heads at an angle to easily view the land below them while in flight. I knew Fuli needed to be an ornithomimid because of their long legs and lightweight builds that paleontologists believe gave them the ability to run very quickly, and I chose a Beishanlong grandis simply because I could find the most information on them. Bunga, as always, was the most difficult to choose, but because we have absolutely no idea which dinosaur would be the "bravest," I chose a velociraptor due to their reputation in pop culture.

Grayscale Still Life

This is an oil study I did with only titanium white and lamp black. I turned the entire photo black and white to reduce the distractions from around the canvas, but it may have looked better beforehand.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Balance
Medium: digital painting
I went and saw The Last Jedi a couple weeks ago and finally got around to making some fanart! I enjoyed it a lot and thought it was very artfully done, especially that scene in Snoke's throne room and the scenes with Finn and Rose with the faviers or however they're spelled (the hyena-horse critters). Can't say much more for spoilers' sake, but I will tell you that I thought it was a really cool movie!

I'll be honest: After watching The Force Awakens, I was a little weirded out by the Reylo ship, mainly because I thought for sure that Rey and Kylo were related, and because she hated him so much. But after seeing The Last Jedi... well, I still don't know for sure how I feel about that ship, but let's just say I'm giving the Reylo shippers a little more attention than I was before.

I'm disappointed in the fanbase for becoming so polarized over their theories and this movie, though. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who likes all the Star Wars movies. Sure, I like some more than others, but I like them all. At the end of the day, Star Wars is just a fictional story. Don't get me wrong: I was practically raised on Star Wars, but it's just a story. It's meant to be enjoyed for fun and entertainment. I mean, come on, it's about freaking zen space wizards! There's no sense in saying or doing hurtful things to other people, including the filmmakers. Filmmakers are people, too. Here is a journal expressing this sentiment, as well as a thank-you letter to Disney and Lucasfilm that you can sign:sumtimesiplaythefool.deviantar…

I'm very excited for where they're going to take the final installment in this trilogy! It hurts my heart to think that Leia will probably never see Ben come home, if he does. I just don't see how it's possible with Carrie Fischer having passed away. Rest in peace, Princess!

Personally, I would like to see Kylo Ren be redeemed. I know some people don't, and that's their opinion, but my opinion is that I'd like to see him be redeemed. I think it would fit well with the Star Wars flow of things, and quite frankly, I think the world needs a strong redemption story right now. There's so much death and chaos and sorrow in the world that I think we need to see that even the most vile person can be redeemed. I would prefer, however, that they don't pull a carbon-copy of Return of the Jedi by killing him off. They could nod to it by redeeming Kylo, but then take it on a new path by having him live to tell the tale. It also would be interesting to see how the people of that universe would deal with a man like Kylo/Ben. Would they execute him? Would they lock him up? Or would they forgive everything he's done? Han told him that it wasn't too late for him to come home, but was that really true? It would be an interesting ethical question for the writers to play with, and nothing that Star Wars has ever done before, as far as I'm aware.

All in all, I enjoyed The Last Jedi a lot, and I'm excited for their next film(s)!

Toothless enjoyed TLJ, as well!
