Wolverine

Wolverine
Medium: Photoshop paint

My original plan was to take the character from the films and draw him in the comic-book Marvel style, but with my unsteady hands and no pen tool there was no way to make a decent outline on the claws. Even as it is their edges aren't even. But that's life!

As with most traditional pieces, this did not scan very well.

Pencil Drawings

Medium: Graphite and pencil

Extemporaneous drawing for an art contest. Contestants are given a limited amount of time to draw a random object, hence the rushed look. Unfortunately one of the criteria was to draw the entire object, although I only heard "make a nice composition." Oh well. That's life.

Prints

Linocut is a printing technique where a block of linoleum is cut away to create a picture. The parts cut away will appear white (or will allow an already-existent color to show through). To get multiple colors with one piece of linoleum, you have to first cut away your whites, print, then cut away whatever you don't want to be your next color, print, and so on.

Monoprinting is a printing technique where ink is applied to a flat surface such as a piece of glass and then brushed and/or scratched away to create lighter areas. It gives one or maybe two prints.

Lady and the Tramp

Title: He's a Tramp
Media: Photoshop paint
A scene from Disney's "Lady and the Tramp!" This is from the song "He's a Tramp," where Peg (gray dog) tells Lady (cocker spaniel) about Lady's new boyfriend's Achilles' Heel. Perhaps the sketchiest song in Disney cartoon history. LOL

Song lyrics (performed by Peggy Lee):

"He's a Tramp, but they love him.
Breaks a new heart every day.
He's a Tramp, they adore him.
And I only hope he'll stay that way.

He's a tramp, he's a scoundrel, he's a rounder, he's a cad.
He's a tramp, but I love him!
Yes, even I have got it pretty bad.

You never know when he'll show up.
He gives you plenty of trouble.
I guess he's just a no 'count pup.
But, I wish that he were double.

He's a tramp. He's a rover!
And there's nothin' more to say.
If he's a tramp, he's a good one,
And I wish that I could travel his way,
Wish that I could travel his way,
Wish that I could travel his way."

Lion King

Can You Feel the Love Tonight?
Media: Photoshop paint

There's a recent trend on the internet where you color kids' coloring pages. I think it's kind of silly, really, but I do love The Lion King! The story is actually quite good and from an artistic standpoint, the music and animation are outstanding.

Horse linocut print

Wild Horse Print
Linocut

This is a linocut print that I've made. Linocuts are made by taking linocut board and carving out all of the areas of your print that you want to stay white. Then, ink is rolled over the carved piece, the piece is pressed onto your media, and your print is made!

It's a Lion. Enough said.

PowerPoint!

Okay, so I like to collect Schleich animals, especially the horses. Apparently that's a crime for someone my age? LOL Come on, everyone has their pointless hobbies!

Desktop Wallpaper

I just finished one of my first desktop/wallpaper designs. It's free to use, but seeing as I made it, my signature must be left on it. Just click on the image to view it larger, then save it onto your computer to use as a background.

Next to Normal

Kristen Hall's Next to Normal poster concept
I was entered in a poster contest for Center Stage of South Carolina's new musical, Next to Normal. Naturally I did not win, but that's just the story of my life. LOL

The winning poster was very cute (although cuteness has nothing to do with the plot and overall emotion of Next to Normal). The emotional impact of the winning poster was one of endearing childlike innocence and it was crafted so that it looked like it was made out of a small child's building blocks and cartoon sketches. Very cute! I will post it here once the finished version is available. :)

Plot of Next to Normal: (SPOILER ALERT) Next to Normal revolves around a distraught and broken family. The main character is the mother, who is a manic-depressive, Schizophrenic, fractured woman who hallucinates about her dead infant son who was born out of wedlock. She believes that the son has grown up and is a young man. Her daughter feels rejected and "invisible" and therefore turns to drugs. The husband, who is trying to hold the house together, begins to feel the strain of holding together a family that is pulling apart. He hallucinates and has emotional, confused breakdowns as well. Although the wife firmly believes that her son is still alive, the husband knows he is dead and refuses to say the son's name. The story ends with the mother leaving the family and the father recognizing his hallucination.  The story does not have a happy ending although it is poignant and does have some resolution. Center Stage has “cleaned up” the script, although they still aim it at a PG-13 audience.
